The wolves were getting hungry so they decided to go out and hunt.
In a short time they found a herd of elk. The wolves were happy to have found the herd so easily so they broke out into a joyous run. The elk, seeing the running wolves and knowing that the wolves were hungry, were inspired to run as well. The elk wanted to show the pack how strong and uncatchable they were. Thus began the ritual hunting dance.
One old elk, who was tired, decided that she did not really want to show how strong she was. The wolves eventually noticed her and focused their attentions on her. The voice of their dance part was, "May we catch you and eat you?" The old elk responded by dancing the answer, "Yes. I am tired. I have had a full life. I have birthed many babies. It is my time to become a part of you wolves." She stopped running and the wolves caught up with her.
The old elk's decision benefitted the elk herd and the wolf pack.
There will be a little more grass for the other elk, and the wolves
will have full bellies for a while.
